Recycled and recyclable materials

We believe in a future where there is no longer need to produce new textile raw materials but it is possible to reuse all those that have already been produced and then forgotten.

Rifò's goal is to create recycled and recyclable products.

Our Material Selection

We select our materials based on these criteria, choosing natural, biodegradable materials composed of at least 50% recycled fibers

There's a third fundamental requirement: transparency. We strive to rely on producers who can guarantee the traceability and ethical practices of the supply chain, in addition to reliable studies and data on production impacts.

Recycled cashmere

Composition: 95% recycled cashmere, 5% recycled wool.

Produced through a traditional mechanical process developed in Prato to regenerate industrial textile scraps and used wool and cashmere garments. The starting material is selected by color and then reduced to fiber through carding. This is then spun again to obtain already colored recycled yarns, which significantly reduces water and chemical consumption compared to virgin yarn production.

Supplier: Filpucci S.p.a

Origin: Italy

Features: biodegradable, breathable, super soft. Wash carefully to prevent shrinking.

Virgin cashmere can be recycled at least 3 times.

Light cashmere

Composition: 70% recycled cashmere, 25% virgin cashmere, 5% virgin wool.

Softer to the touch than our classic recycled cashmere yarn, thanks to a higher proportion of virgin fibers, longer than those that have undergone the recycling process. This material allows us to create lightweight, equally warm, and soft garments. The recycled cashmere component is obtained by sorting used garments by color, eliminating the need for re-dyeing the fiber. The virgin part is certified Responsible Wool Standard, ensuring an animal-friendly wool production process, particularly avoiding the mulesing technique.

Supplier: Filpucci S.p.a

Origin: Italy

Features: biodegradable, super fine, breathable, super soft. Wash carefully to prevent shrinking.

Virgin cashmere can be recycled at least 3 times.

Recycled wool

Composition: 100% recycled wool.

Wool fibers, longer and more durable than cashmere fibers, make this completely circular and monomaterial composition possible. This recycled wool yarns are also produced locally in Prato, through careful manual color sorting by the "cenciaioli," resulting in recycled yarns that do not require re-dyeing.

Supplier: Filpucci S.p.a

Origin: Italy

Features: biodegradable, breathable. Wash carefully to prevent shrinking.

Virgin wool can be recycled at least 3 times.

Carded wool cloth

Composition: 62% recycled wool, 38% recycled polyamide.

A recycled wool cloth, recycled and woven in Prato, following an ancient tradition. The wool used comes from pre-consumer industrial fabric surplus. Sorted by color and composition, these scraps are transformed back into fibers through carding. This eliminates the need for re-dyeing, which would require significant water and chemical consumption. Polyamide, also recycled, is added to strengthen the wool fibers stressed by the recycling process. This is the only material we currently use that contains a percentage of non-biodegradable material.

Supplier: Mapel S.p.a

Origin: Italy

Features: breathable, warm. Dry clean to prevent shrinking.

Carded wool cloth can be recycled once through downcycling.

How to recycle used garments?

To show exactly how the recycling process works, we edited a video.
We visited the partners we collaborate with, who are part of the recycling supply chain in the textile district of Prato - cenciaioli, spinners, and artisans who make our garments.
Watch the video and discover all the stages that lead to the transformation of used garments and industrial scraps into new textile resources.

Recycled Denim

Composition: 70% recycled cotton from used jeans, 25% virgin cotton, 5% other fibers from hems and other trimmings of recycled garments that cannot be traced.

Recycled denim yarns are unique, created through the recycling of denim garments sorted by the color of the original jeans. The recycling process also takes place in Prato, where denim scraps are shredded, turned back into fibers, and transformed into new yarns. We used these yarns for lightweight knitwear as well as for designing and weaving our first recycled fabrics, a canvas and a twill.

Supplier: Pinori Filati S.p.a (yarns), BigBen Italia S.r.l. (fabrics)

Origin: Italy

Features: biodegradable, breathable, cool.

Recycled denim can be recycled once.

Recycled and Organic Denim

Composition: 50% recycled cotton, 50% organic cotton.

Denim yarns recycled from industrial cotton surplus (pre-consumer) and used jeans (post-consumer), combined with virgin organic cotton. The use of organic cotton enhances its technical performance, making it more resilient. The two cotton fibers - recycled and organic - together allow for significant water savings, as organic cotton is grown without pesticides and prevents soil depletion.

Supplier: Belda Lloréns S.A. (yarns), Lanificio Becagli S.r.l. (fabrics)

Origin: Spain (yarns), Italy (fabrics)

Features: biodegradable, breathable, cool.

Recycled and organic denim can be recycled once.

Recycled and virgin cotton

Composition: 100% cotton, of which 45 to 60% is recycled.

The cotton yarns we use for our beach towels and shawls consists of a variable percentage of 45 to 60% recycled cotton, with the remaining portion being virgin cotton. Recycled cotton is produced from industrial textile surplus (pre-consumer), which is shredded and transformed back into yarns. Coloration is achieved by pre-sorting scraps by color, thereby avoiding the need for a re-dyeing process and saving a significant amount of water. Dyeing, on the other hand, is used to achieve specific colors. Unlike wool, cotton fiber couldn't constitute a yarn on its own, so it needs to be reinforced with a virgin fiber.

Supplier: Marchi e Fildi S.p.A.

Origin: Italy

Features: biodegradable and breathable.

Virgin cotton can be recycled once.

Recycled and organic cotton

Composition: 50% cotton recycled from production surplus, 50% organic cotton.

To create summer sweaters and new types of garments, we use yarns made of 50% cotton recycled from industrial cotton scraps (pre-consumer) and 50% organic cotton. In this case, the use of organic cotton allows us to significantly reduce the amount of water and chemicals used in production, as organic cotton is grown while preserving the environment, without pesticides and avoiding soil depletion.

Supplier: Belda Lloréns S.A. (yarns), Target S.r.l and BigBen Italia S.r.l (fabrics)

Origin: Spain (yarns), Italy (fabrics)

Features: biodegradable, breathable, cool.

Virgin cotton can be recycled once.

Recyled silk

Composition: 100% recycled silk.

This material is produced in Italy, in the textile district of Como. Its origin is pre-consumer, as it comes from the recycling of virgin Mulberry silk’s scraps. In addition to giving a second life to industrial surplus that would otherwise have been discarded, this yarn can be considered cruelty-free because no silk worms were sacrificed to produce it. To further reduce the environmental impact of its production, we purchased it in its raw color to avoid dyeing processes. After the success of our first silk garments, we experimented with a plant-based dyeing technique on them, allowing us to obtain unique pieces with natural and biodegradable dyes.

Supplier: Torcitura di Domaso S.r.l.

Origin: Italy

Features: biodegradable, breathable, soft, 4-season versatility as it's cool in summer and warm in winter.

Virgin silk can be recycled once.
