The unbearable fashion pollution

Fashion pollutes, a lot.

If I told you that the fashion world is one of the most polluting industries in the world, would you believe it?

Probably you haven’t paid attention to it but you have to know that the way you buy, the choice of the garments and where you put your clothes when you don’t use them anymore, have an enormous impact on the environment.

Today I want to examine in depth this theme that is fundamental for our future.

Let’s go to discover together how much and how it is possible for the fashion industry to pollute so much.

Fast fashion

The main reasons are the enormous quantity of clothes produced and the incredible speed with which they are distributed and used. Consider that today clothing consumption has tripled compared to fifty years ago.

People buy bigger quantities at a faster rhythm. Garments producers wants to sell them in the fastest way possible.

These necessities gave life to fast mood, that means low-prices clothes and poor quality, processed using polluting tools and methods, by underpaid child workers.

These clothes end in the rubbish too rapidly, without being recycled.

The result is a devastating impact on the environment.

Il risultato è un impatto enorme e devastante sull'ambiente.

The fashion impact

To have a clearer and more correct idea of the effect of fashion on the planet, it is necessary to have a look at some data.

This is why I created a list of the most considerable impacts of fashion world:

  • It causes the 20% of the global water waste
  • It provokes the 10% of carbon dioxide emissions
  • It is responsible for the 24% of the use of insecticides
  • It is guilty for the 11% of the pesticides
  • The 85% of the clothes ends up in dumps
  • Only the 1% of the garments is recycled or upcycled
  • From 2000 the average consumer buy 60% more
  • The sector is worth 2,5 thousands dollars, globally

This is not a result to be proud of.

Possible solutions

The first fundamental step has been made by United Nations that, four years ago, established 17 Objectives of sustainable development (SDGs) to reach within 2030.

Considering the weight, speaking about money, and the effect it has had until now, fashion universe could give a great hand in reaching these targets.

It is necessary a work of information that reaches the biggest number possible all around the world.

The main problem is the ignorance of the population regarding the fact that the act of buying a t-shirt to a reduced price can mean the death of a child on the other side of the planet.

One of the positive signals is the increase of consciousness that is spreading around in developed Countries. The birth of realities that focus on creating a sustainable product.

Like we do here at Rifò that, as mantra, we have the reuse of materials and high-quality standards.

Conclusions

Here we are at the end of this article.

I’m sure you have understood how the fashion industry is playing its role in destroying the planet.

You must know that little daily gestures make the difference. Start buying less, pay attention to labels and look for high-quality garments.

Try to throw away less frequently your clothes, reusing them in different ways. You could be taken as an example by someone else. Ethical fashion can be possible if we act all together.

If you don’t know where to start from, have a look at our online shop and choose the item of clothing you like the most. This is a little step to truly make the difference!
